The estate owes its reputation as the "quintessential Graves" to both the smoky notes of its wines and its hillside terroir (Laffite or Lafite in Old French), made up of semi-precious and river stones deposited by the Garonne millions of years ago.
Composed of Günz gravel, the Smith Haut Lafitte terroir boasts two surprising characteristics: superb natural drainage that forces the vine roots to descend deep to extract water and mineral salts over six meters deep and a "mirror effect" that reflects the sun's rays onto the gravelly soil for optimal maturation.

Excellent with noble, succulent and spicy red meats, duck, pigeon, mature cheeses, game.

Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 4%, Petit Verdot 1%.
Medium-intense garnet-purple color. Aromas of warm redcurrants, cooked blackberries and crème de cassis with notes of spice cake, dried roses, forest floor and pencil lead, and subtle notes of violets. Medium to full body, the palate features a fantastic core of densely packed red and black fruit, framed by wonderfully ripe, rounded tannins. Excellent freshness, long and fragrant finish.
