Vinicola Carlevaro
In the early 1900s, grandfather Severino Carlevaro started the business, focusing on the marketing of wines, especially foreign ones. The passion is passed on to his son Giuseppe. But it is in the 1960s that his grandson Gian Piero, thanks to his studies as an oenologist, begins in Bellinzona, in the Molinazzo area of Arbedo, to devote himself to improving the quality of production, transforming and expanding the family business. Gian Piero Carlevaro studied oenology at the prestigious Oenological School of Alba (Piedmont) and attended countless training and refresher courses at the Faculty of Oenology of the University of Bordeaux.
His specific expertise allows him to modernize the new winemaking cellar to the fullest. New stainless steel tanks are placed in the renovated premises; also renovated are the bottling, wine storage, and aging rooms in Barriques. In the old cellar, wooden barrels are replaced by fiberglass tanks.
In 1982, the winery grows further. Gian Piero decides to favor Ticino grapes, buying them from 200 local winemakers, and imports foreign wines, especially Italian, bottling and distributing them.
Viticola Carlevaro maintains privileged relations with Piedmont, and in Monferrato Gian Piero vinifies Barbera grapes, producing about 200,000 liters annually.
Merlot production becomes increasingly important, and thanks to the favorable climatic conditions in the Bellinzona area, excellent grape quality is assured. This makes it possible to improve and ensure a high level of the wines produced in-house by Carlevaro. The winery goes as far as producing up to 100,000 bottles per year in its best years.
