It was in 1725 that Irishman Thomas Barton founded his wine trading company in Bordeaux. In 1826, Hugh Barton, bought part of the Léoville Domaine, which he renamed Léoville Barton and in the famous 1855 classification received the rank of Grand Cru Classé of St. Julien. Today, the Barton family is still at the helm of the Domaine, which turns out to be the oldest, still owner of a Grand Cru Classé in Bordeaux.
The 50-hectare vineyard is planted on gravelly-clay soils facing the Gironde estuary.
