Irish-born Frank Phélan founded the château in the early 19th century, buying two wineries from the Marquis of Ségur and uniting them. In 2003, Phélan-Ségur was classified as cru bourgeois exceptionnel and is now under the management of the Van de Vyvere family. The 70 hectares of vineyards in the immediate vicinity of Montrose and Calon-Ségur lie on gravelly, clay soils, producing elegant and refined wines each year that impress with their high quality.
